BlueHorizon Charting a course for ocean conservation

Marine Conservation Programs

Working with local communities to restore and protect marine habitats, including coral reefs, mangroves, and marine life, to ensure biodiversity and ecological balance.

Youth Empowerment

Offering training and mentorship opportunities to young leaders, enabling them to become advocates and ambassadors for ocean health and sustainable practices.

Community Engagement

Collaborating with coastal communities to build resilience against the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable livelihoods that align with environmental conservation.

Research and Advocacy

Conducting research on the current state of the ocean and using data to inform policies, advocate for stronger environmental protection laws, and raise awareness on the importance of ocean preservation.

About us

Who Are We!

Blue Horizon is a registered, youth-led non-governmental organization (NGO) with national registration number 00NGO/R/7291, operating under the NGO Act No. 24 of 2002 of the United Republic of Tanzania. Our organization is driven by a passion to protect and preserve the ocean and its ecosystems through the power of youth and community engagement.
We believe that lasting change begins with education and awareness, which is why we focus on empowering coastal communities, especially young people, to take active roles in ocean conservation efforts. Through capacity-building programs, hands-on projects, and strategic partnerships, we aim to create sustainable solutions that address the environmental challenges faced by Tanzania’s marine ecosystems.

Our Projects

At Blue Horizon, our commitment to ocean conservation is embodied in a range of impactful projects aimed at addressing the most pressing environmental challenges facing our coastal ecosystems. Each initiative is designed to promote sustainable practices, protect marine life, and engage local communities in safeguarding our ocean’s future
Ocean Cleanup Project

The Ocean Cleanup Project is a hands-on initiative focused on reducing marine pollution, particularly plastic waste, which poses a major threat to marine ecosystems.

Free Oceans from Medical Waste

Our Free Oceans from Medical Waste initiative targets a critical but often overlooked form of ocean pollution—medical waste. This project works to remove hazardous materials such as syringes, gloves, masks, and other medical debris that can harm marine life and contaminate the ocean.

Life Guarding Project

The Life Guarding Project is dedicated to ensuring the safety of both local communities and visitors who rely on Tanzania’s beaches for recreation and livelihood. This project involves training and deploying skilled lifeguards who monitor beaches and provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies.

Mangrove Restoration Project

Mangroves are crucial for maintaining coastal ecosystems, acting as natural barriers against storms and erosion, while also providing a habitat for diverse species. Our Mangrove Restoration Project focuses on rehabilitating and preserving mangrove forests along Tanzania’s coastline.

Why Us

Programs & Projects Summary

Ocean Guardians Initiative

The Ocean Guardians Initiative educates and empowers young leaders to take action in marine conservation. Through environmental education, leadership training, and hands-on activities like beach cleanups and advocacy campaigns, youth become ocean ambassadors. The program also encourages young people to participate in policy discussions, ensuring their voices contribute to sustainable ocean management.

Coral Reef Restoration Project

This project focuses on rehabilitating damaged coral reefs through artificial reef structures and coral nurseries. Local fishermen and divers receive training in reef conservation, and scientific monitoring helps guide restoration efforts. By promoting eco-friendly tourism and sustainable diving practices, the project not only protects marine biodiversity but also creates alternative income sources for coastal communities.

Mangrove Reforestation Program

Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting coastlines and supporting marine biodiversity. This program focuses on replanting and restoring mangrove forests to prevent coastal erosion and improve carbon storage. Local communities are actively involved in conservation efforts, ensuring long-term protection of these vital ecosystems while enhancing fish nursery habitats and sustainable resource use.
